The work

About our lighting installation

When a homeowner calls about lighting installation, it is usually because a room feels dim, a remodel is underway, or they are simply tired of a dated fixture. The work involves more than swapping a bulb: it means positioning lights for the right effect, running or extending wiring, and mounting everything securely so it looks intentional.

We start by turning off the circuit and confirming it is dead. For recessed lights, we mark the ceiling, cut the holes with a drywall saw, then run NM cable from the panel or an existing junction box. We mount the housings, make the splices with wire nuts, and push everything back before installing the trim and bulbs.

The job varies most with ceiling construction and access. A single-story home with open attic space is straightforward; a finished second floor or a vaulted ceiling means fishing wire through walls or cutting extra access holes. The number of fixtures, whether you want dimmers or smart switches, and the weight of a chandelier all affect how long the work takes.

On the day, we lay down drop cloths to protect floors and furniture, and we use dust barriers when cutting into ceilings. We clean up all drywall dust and debris before we leave. Before we arrive, you should know where you want each light and have the fixture on hand if it is not a recessed can.

After the job, we test every switch and dimmer, and we make sure the circuit is not overloaded. You can paint or patch any small access holes we had to make, but we keep those to a minimum. If you are replacing an old fixture, we properly dispose of it unless you want to keep it.

We also verify that the mounting box is rated for the fixture weight and that all connections are tight. For outdoor lights, we use weatherproof boxes and gaskets. The goal is a clean installation that works reliably for years, not just a light that turns on.

IC-rated housings

For recessed lights near insulation, we use IC-rated housings that can be covered without fire risk. Non-IC housings require clearance, which is a common mistake in older homes.

Box fill calculations

When adding a fixture, we count the wires and clamps to ensure the junction box is not overfilled. Too many wires in a small box can cause short circuits or overheating.

How the job runs

Our 4-step lighting installation process

01

On-site walkthrough

We look at the room, check the ceiling structure, and confirm which circuit will feed the new lights. We also ask about your dimming or smart switch preferences.

02

Power off and prep

We shut off the breaker, verify it is dead, and lay down drop cloths. We also set up a dust barrier if we are cutting into drywall.

03

Wiring and mounting

We run cable, make splices, and mount the fixture or recessed housing. For heavy fixtures, we use a brace or a box rated for the weight, and we test every connection.

04

Cleanup and test

We vacuum up dust, remove debris, and turn the power back on. We test each switch and dimmer, and we show you how to operate any smart features.

The difference

Why JM & Sons Electrical Services for lighting installation

  • Built-in look

A lighting job should look like it was part of the house from the start. We take time to align recessed cans, center fixtures, and hide wire runs so the finish is clean and deliberate.

  • No flicker, no heat

Loose connections cause flickering and can overheat. We make solid splices and torque terminal screws properly, so your lights stay steady and cool even with LED dimmers.

  • Right box for the job

Using an undersized or unrated box is a common shortcut that leads to sagging fixtures or fire hazards. We match the box to the fixture weight and wiring count, every time.
