Northern Virginia is three jurisdictions and a hundred years of housing in one small area. Inside the Beltway it is brick colonials, Cape Cods and garden apartments from the 1930s to the 1960s, many with cloth wiring, two-prong outlets and panels that were sized for a house with one television. Out toward Fairfax and Springfield the stock is newer, townhouse rows and split levels with more circuits but tighter panels, and almost all of it has been added onto at least once. We lay down floor protection on the way in, keep the work in one place, and take every scrap of old wire and drywall with us on the way out.

Three permit offices, one contractor
Fairfax County, Arlington County and the City of Alexandria each issue their own electrical permits and run their own inspections. Your contractor pulls the right one for your address and schedules the inspection; you should see the permit before work starts.
Dominion Energy disconnects
Any panel upgrade or service change needs the utility to pull the meter and reconnect afterward. Your contractor books that window with Dominion so the crew works on a dead service and your power is back the same day.
